How to Clean and Care for Your Carpet
A good carpet can look new for many years if you look after it properly. These simple habits take only a few minutes and make a big difference.

Vacuum often
Dust and dirt wear down the carpet fibers, so vacuum once or twice a week. In busy rooms like the living room and hallway, do it more often. Go slowly and run over each area a few times.
Clean spills quickly
If something spills, act fast. Blot the spot with a clean, dry cloth, pressing down gently. Do not rub, because rubbing pushes the stain deeper and can damage the pile. Then dab with a cloth dipped in a little lukewarm water and mild soap, and blot dry.
Do not soak the carpet
Too much water can leave marks and a damp smell. Use only a little water, and let the area dry fully, with a window open or a fan on.
Protect it from sun and furniture
Strong sunlight can fade colors over time, so use curtains in sunny rooms. Put felt pads under heavy furniture to stop dents, and move furniture a little now and then.
Care for shaggy carpets
Shaggy carpets need gentle treatment. Shake them outside to remove dust, and vacuum on a low setting. Avoid pulling on loose strands. If one sticks out, trim it with scissors instead of pulling it.
Test before you clean
Before using any cleaner, try it on a small hidden corner first. This shows you whether the color holds.
